Samsung LM301B LED diodes introduce

Samsung LM301B may be the most popular LED chip in recent years. Its extraordinary efficiency makes the difference. But the successor is already on the starting line.

Samsung LM301B shocks the LED world

With the launch of the LM301B LED chip in mid-2017, Samsung was about to revolutionize the world of lighting. With an efficiency of 220 lumens per watt, this package remains the leader in commercial LEDs. Of course, high-efficiency LEDs are especially attractive for grow lights. That is why we study the chips carefully. The data sheet is here.

Internally, the LM301B is the successor to the previously popular LM561C. Both are medium power LEDs and Samsung has gained a leading position in this area in recent years. The secret of this success lies in the combination of so-called flip-chip technology and advanced phosphorescent coatings. Let me briefly explain!

The core of a light-emitting diode is the “chip”, which, depending on the material, begins to emit monochromatic light at a particular voltage. These tips are usually attached to the housing and connected to the housing contacts with gold wires. However, this has the disadvantage that the thin gold wire is very sensitive and can be damaged by the low pressure applied to the package. Also, reflections on the case can cause inefficiencies at various points.

Flip-Chip technology can easily avoid this problem by flipping the tip over and connecting the material’s P and N leads directly to the metal contacts on the package. The result is a more durable and efficient LED. In addition, the metal contacts greatly improve heat dissipation. It sounds simple, but this technology requires advanced manufacturing technology. This technology has been optimized with the LM301B, creating a new light efficiency record.

Fluorescent coating turns LM301B into a full-spectrum LED

Initially, the light-emitting diodes had only two colors, red and green. Other colors and even the full spectrum are not feasible. Only when gallium nitride semiconductors were developed in the early 1990s did blue LEDs become a reality. This wavelength contains photons that carry large amounts of energy. When these high-energy light particles are exposed to a particular luminescent material, they are excited to emit low-energy light (= high wavelengths, i.e. green, yellow, red, etc.). This is called luminescence. The layer of phosphorescent material on the LED chip can generate full spectrum light from blue light that appears white to our eyes.

In luminescence, the quality of the material is especially important for the blue light conversion efficiency. It also determines the spectrum of light emitted. The same blue LED can achieve different color rendering values and color temperatures through different coatings. With the LM301B, Samsung offers a wide range of color rendering properties of 70, 80 and 90, with variable values between the color temperatures of 2700K and 6500K.

LM301B for LED plant light

Everyone knows that lumens (which may seem impressive, but 223 lm / W) are not the correct indicator of plant lighting. However, Samsung also announced PPF values for various product lines in May 2018. Therefore, the LM301B stands out among all white LEDs, and you can be sure that it is 2.92 µmol / J at a current of 65 mA. LED activation at lower currents can easily reach 3.0 µmol / J and more.
